One band that appeared on our desk this morning (well, our inbox) took us by surprise – because they reminded of us of so many bands we didn’t really know where to start… Jesus and Mary Chain, The Black Angels, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Moon Duo, The Wooden Ships, Pink Floyd even – and we could probably name quite a few more. And yet, despite reminding us of so many of our favourite bands, they are also sounding pretty damn original, so we did some digging on the Black Planes…
In their native Seattle, it seems they have already built a pretty strong following due to their notorious live shows, and they recently recorded their debut album with local legend Chris Hanzsek (producer of Soundgarden; Melvins and many others), and co-founder of Reciprocal Recordings (home of most early Sub Pop acts, including Nirvana) alongside Jack Endino.
Their sound is kind of shoegaze-ish, fusing 70’s space rock fog with 90’s Madchester grooves and Jesus and Mary Chain/Ride vibes – a lot to get your head round, I know – so just take a listen:
By far the most interesting thing we discovered about the The Black Planes, however, is that the vinyl release of their album will be on Backfire Motorcycle Night – a night attended by “approximately 1000 motorcycle enthusiasts, hipsters, flipsters and psychonauts in the most happening section of Seattle.” Now this sounds pretty exciting to us – especially the flipsters – so if you’re nearby, we’d suggest you check them out!
