Britney Spears. Some would call her one of the greatest pop artists, well, ever! With her second album Oops!… I Did It Again turning 20 this year (YES, 20!) we thought it was only right to dedicate a full All Things Covered post to artists who wanted to create their own versions of her legendary songs. And who can blame them, enjoy!
Or, The Whale – Toxic
Released in January 2003, Toxic first appeared on Britney’s fourth studio album In The Zone. The track proved to be a global success, with it reaching the top five in 15 countries! Taking on the task of turning this dance-pop hit into something extremely atmospheric is San Francisco based Americana band, Or, The Whale. The sliding guitars and vocal harmonies transport you into an eerie and mysterious world, miles away from the one first created by Britney, but we love it.
Lilly Allen – Womanizer
Released as the lead single of Britney’s sixth studio album, Circus, the electro-pop girl anthem Womanizer was praised by music critics for its snappy melody and empowering lyrics. As a self-acclaimed Britney fan, Lily Allen chose to create a stripped-back acoustic version, which stays true to the melody and the beat but has more of a pop/reggae feel.
Slothrust – …Baby One More Time
Sharing the name of her debut album, …Baby One More Time is one of the best selling singles of all time. So it’s no surprise that alternative rock band Slothrust are one of the many artists who have chosen to cover it. In their blues-rock version, the beefy guitar takes the centre stage, with vocalist Leah Wellamb singing in her lower register. Oh, and it’s worth listening until the end just for the mind-blowing guitar solo. You’ll thank us.
