New York-based R&B artist Jovian uses his latest single ‘Better’ to encourage others to experience tasting and seeing sounds. Jovian lives with synesthesia, a condition that blends the senses and allows those who have it to taste, feel, smell and see sounds. Jovian treats his music as a canvas, with his compositions inducing a world of sensory magic through light and bouncy soundscapes and textured instrumentation.
The dreamy track uses relatively simple, yet very effective compositions. The floaty music within ‘Better’ sees Jovian’s vocal abilities elegantly flow with breezy guitars, while cool beats capture his mosaic of senses.
Originally attracted to music due to its therapeutic qualities, Jovian’s creativity lead him to acting school at the age of 11, which helped him to develop his musical ability and desire to share his raw and vulnerable stories.
“There was no way I was going to allow myself to feel ‘faux happiness’ from a pill and be a slave to the pharmaceutical industry. Clearly I chose happiness because I’m here currently speaking about it. From that day on I promised myself I’d use music and any other art form as an outlet for my mental sensations.”
Finding his calling as a musician, Jovian saw that he could use his platform as an opportunity to raise awareness and help children who also suffer with mental health issues.
“Since then, it’s my duty to not only expose Hip Hop to people who are ignorant or hateful towards this genre that saved my life but also expose artistic outlets to kids who deal with what I dealt with mentally but may not be encouraged to create or even think about their feelings. I cannot allow kids, especially kids of colour, to feel alone during those times.”
