In a raw, soulful and heartfelt performance, Trai’s voice embodies the relatable turmoil of a break-up, a story all too familiar to most. Painted with unconcealed lyricism, there’s a no-holds-barred approach in Trai’s delivery of sincerity and emotional intensity.
Pianist Lauren Glanville’s subtle, melodic piano (probably unintentionally) reminiscent of Sampha’s ‘(No One Knows Me) Like The Piano’, sets the perfect scene to carryTrai’s unmistakably delicate and unique vocals throughout the verse. Leading into a layered harmonious chorus, the track is leathered with strings and pretty vocal harmonies. Admittedly, while not necessarily a bad thing, the instrumentation doesn’t vary much further from the chorus but, in turn, the focus is never shifted from Trai’s vocal performance, allowing the emotions to remain prominent and the delivery to remain raw.
As the first single for his debut album ‘MMXXII’, Trai introduces a beautifully realistic and authentic story-teller’s approach to situations that are from true experience. Moving from France to London to follow in the footsteps of personal inspirations Lewis Capaldi, Adele and Sam Smith, Trai is nothing short of a promising upcomer with dedication and ambition. ‘The One’ is the first of what is hopefully many raw, soulful and heartfelt performances.
