Affy La God’s latest track should come packaged in a haunted VHS tape. ‘We Found It’ is a punchy, spirited piece of hip-hop bursting with 80s horror-nostalgia. Just in time for Halloween.
The interstellar synths are really the core of this track. They pulse slowly to set the scene, ringing out from deep space – the thing from another world.
What breaks first contact is Affy La God’s autotuned cry. He establishes himself quickly over this constantly unfolding, neon-soaked beat; adapting his flow and delivery regularly, to great effect, as he explores all corners of this cinematic sound.
Those synths develop brilliantly as the track goes on. Bursts and pings of electronic noise build-up and collapse, adding so much energy and momentum to what’s already an engaging beat – never mind that the producer threw a kitchen sink’s worth of vocal effects in.
What impresses me most is Affy’s ability to find a unique angle in what’s become a cultural cliche. Between Drive, The Weeknd, Hotline Miami [and most other times you’ve seen neon pink used in the last five years], I thought we’d mined 80s, night-stalker-styled synth music to its last drop – but I’m always open to new, exciting examples.
‘We Found It’ uses its middle-eight to introduce a booming, fantasy-narrator and add texture to this cinemascope vision Affy hopes to explore more on his upcoming debut EP Affy La God: Volume 1. I’ll forgive the “rattling trap hi-hats” if it comes with the same character this track establishes.
It’s an epic experiment and testament to the fact artists from this island never take the straightest path to rap music. Committing to a bold vision is just one way Affy, real name Africa Nile, can establish himself and inspire others.
