Athen base Giorgos Tabakis is familiar with sounds that are of the fringe, especially since he’s the one making them.
Prog, jazz and folk collide when Giorgos picks up his eight stringed guitar. Now, armed with his one-of-a-kind instrument, Giorgos has released his most heartfelt and inventive body of work yet – the 10-piece album hEre nOw theN.
The album’s opening track “Attraction” perfectly introduces viewers to Giorgos’ world. The track is just the first of many balancing acts, as Girogos takes a compositional mindset to song structure.
Here, sparse but free-flowing jazz melodies are underpinned with ominous basslines and booming percussion to create a soundscape that’s dreamy, if a little dark, and totally transformative.
Giorgos’ signature instrument, the GT8 string guitar, is a unique model. The Moov Guitars company made this instrument and dedicated it to Giorgos, using his initials as a model name.
The instrument has since become inseparable for Giorgos, which makes sense to any listener who hears the two working in perfect, symbiotic harmony.
That partnership between a player and their instrument has always been present for Giorgos, he said, “I remember that first motivation which was just to touch and play the guitar because I loved it’s sound. It was my sound, produced from my body without any intervention between me and the instrument. Magic!”
And it’s built to this, the hEre nOw theN, where Girogos shares a bond that has led to some of the most interesting and unique sounds in the space.
