Ever heard a song on the radio and thought, that sounds familiar? As more and more pop songs are being produced, of course, there’s going to be a limit to how many new chord combinations can be used. However, sometimes it’s hard to believe that an artist has got away with making a hit that’s so similar to another. Is it a coincidence, is it a rip-off? We’ll leave you to decide for yourselves.
Olly Murs – “Dance with Me Tonight” & Meghan Trainor – “Dear Future Husband”
Back in 2011, Olly Murs released one of his biggest hits to date, “Dance with Me Tonight” which featured on his third studio album – Right Place Right Time. Just a few years later in 2015, American pop artist Meghan Trainor appears with what some may describe as a very familiar tune. Not only do both songs start with talking, but they also have the same chord progression and feel good doo-wop kick. I know I’d be less than impressed if I were Olly!
Kesha – “TiK ToK” & Katy Perry – “California Gurls”
Kesha’s “TiK ToK” instantly became a hit for party-goers around the world, and only a few months later Katy Perry gave us another pre-drink anthem with “California Gurls”. But funnily enough, the 2 tracks sound so similar, they could easily be the same song. With both songs displaying a bouncy, synth-heavy production, and even similar vocal effects, the MASHUP (listen below) must have almost made itself!
Selena Gomez – “Same Old Love” & Camila Cabello – “Havana”
Another case of 2 female stars having VERY similar songs. Selena first released “Same Old Love” back in 2015, with “Havana” being released two years later in 2017. Despite Camila adding a smidge of her Cuban sass, both songs share the same accented intro on the piano. Not to mention the similar album covers…
